Taking place on Tuesday 07 Dec 2004

China has seen tremendous growth in the usage of SMS with 550 billion messages predicted to be sent in 2004 up from 170 billion in 2003. Likewise mobile data usage is expected to continue to exceed 100% annual growth over the next several years.

A market that is set to dominate the world of GSM sounds like one that we should be pay some attention to. This event is intended to start you thinking about the opportunities for the mobile services industry as well as some of the challenges you will face.

Also details will be announced of an opportunity to participate in an exhibition in Hong Kong with a highly attractive incentive offer taking place in April 2005.

Our speakers have all got direct experience of the mobile market in China:

Ulrich Bolze - Siemens Mobile Acceleration

Ulrich will give an overview of the wireless telecoms market in China. He will also share Siemens experiences of the venture capital in China: stage, challenges, typical terms, exit, differences to Europe. He will talk about the characteristics and differences to Europe of technology start-ups in China with particular example in wireless.

Andrew Darling - journalist

Meetings with senior advisors to the Ministry of Information Industries - covered WiFi, 3G licenses, foreign investment and JVs. He will also talk about the Premium SMS and content business in China as well as the challenges of doing business in China.

Peter Courtney - Mobix

Peter will talk about the highs and lows of Mobix's experiences in China from initial meetings at their stand at the 3GSM show in Cannes Feb 2002, through opening office in Hong Kong the following September and the Mobix service going live Xmas 2002. A Beijing office followed in September 2003 with equipment approval in April 2004.

David Marsden

As Director UK & Ireland of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council David will talk the ICT event in April and the incentives to attend.

Ulrich joined Siemens Mobile Acceleration (SMAC) in September 2001 and focuses on investments in wireless communications solutions. He manages the firm’s engagements in MotionBridge (France) und Mobile Wisdom (USA). In addition he is in charge of the company’s portfolio strategy.

He supported large-scale voice infrastructure projects for operators in China, Colombia and Portugal. In other positions he planned first European GSM networks and conceived innovative mobile services. About Andrew Darling

Andrew is a writer and consultant in the mobile communications industry. Since 1996 he has covered fixed and wireless broadband networking technologies and services for a variety of publications, including Information Week, IT Week, Computing, Computer Weekly, MforMobile, Wireless E-volution, New Media Age, Mobile Communications Intl and 3GSM World Focus. In addition he has contributed to special technology supplements for The Times.

In 2002 Andrew was invited to join AMF Ventures, a strategic advisory and investment company focused on the TMT sector, as a consultant. In this role he has provided guidance, project management and advice on product marketing, communications, competitive and market analysis to clients such as Swisscom Eurospot, The Cloud, BT Openzone and Vodafone.

He will be chairing Digital Africa 2005 in Cape Town next February. The event will bring together public and private sector parties interested in the development of ICT in across the African continent.

About Peter Courtney

Started off in the Telecomms industry in 1987 selling fax machines, in 1988 the Post Office workers went on strike and Fax machines were all the rage. He then started his own company called "Columbia Communications", which specialised in the supply and maintainence of large Fax Servers in the City. They added Audio Conferencing Servers to the product line up in 1995, and in 2001 he launched a new company called Mobix Limited

David Marsden is the Director UK & Ireland of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council where he has worked for nearly 20 years. He is a graduate of the London School of Economics, in History and Economics.
